If you hike up the start of the Swampy Pass trail to the west of the road that has it's head a bit farther down it will cross the grade. Quite obvious. Also the rest stop mentioned is, or at least used to be, the trailhead for a short hike to some beaver ponds. Nice hike, neat - if non railroad - location. Grade heading on down the mountain is quite obvious at that trailhead too.
