Nearly all of us agree -
Stay in Chama, take the morning bus to Antonito, and ride the train westbound – see [
cumbrestoltec.com] and scroll down to Trip #5. The next morning you can chase the train eastbound from Chama to Cumbres Pass, and then have an easy drive to Durango in the afternoon.
There are several good places to stay in Chama; my favorite is 'THE (Shamrock) HOTEL & SHOPS', right across the street from the depot. It's run by Roger Hogan's wife Barbara; they're both very friendly, and Roger can probably give you some tips on were to get good views of the train if you chase the 2nd day. The Fred Harmon museum on the west side of Pagosa Springs is well worth a stop on your way to Durango; Harmon was a well-known artist who also did the Red Ryder comic strip many years ago, and the old Gomez store has been moved to the museum from Gato.
