Another option for Durango is "The Knight Sky" which has open platforms in the front and back you can access. Nice airline type seats, plus they will give you soft drinks and such during the trip, including a sweet roll in the morning, and some goodies. I guess C&TS also does that in their premium car. I don't think Knight Sky is adult only, but you can check. It is usually the next to last car and has nice wide windows. If you scroll down to our D&S videos you can see a one-minute preview of our video, shot mostly from this car to see what its like. I was in the back mostly though(of that car).
One other pointer on Silverton. You might look into getting a golf cart to get around town during the layover there. I don't remember the name of the place but its right there on the engineer side of where they arrive I believe. Our problem was that the train was very late getting in, so we had it for less time than normal. I dropped off my wife to shop, while I grabbed a deli sandwich and headed down to watch the trains turning and servicing. You could save a lot of walking if like me you have some bad wheels. Reservations folks in DGO can help you with that if interested.
Both rides are great, and remember this was all the same railroad before 1970 (Denver and Rio Grande Western).
Scroll dow to the 3rd listing and hit the preview of the link below. About 2-3 below that is the C&TS videos, so check them out, as we did a riding video on each railroad, plus trackside stuff. You should have a great time. Its always been a great destination for us in Ohio.
