I think I've heard the story of the explosion before but I would love to hear it again.
It is fairly easy to spot the ROW from Carbon Junction to Aztec (I got a tour of the Bondad tank from the owner). One bright soul (a foamer???) has built a wooden deck on one of the truss bridges with a gazebo about halfway out. Someday I might have the guts to stop by & see if I can wrangle a tour. The ROW is hard to follow in the urban, if thats the word, clutter between Aztec & Farmington. Google Earth is of great assistance and you can actually spot the curvature of the final wye by the San Juan Regional Center although you would not have a clue from the ground. Someplace in the archives somebody put together a great group of photographs showing exactly where all the tracks used to be but its basically unrecognizable. Videos covering the operations are available commercially by WB Videos and Sunday River videos...I think. Just as a side note the mixed was called the Apple Flyer and at least one of my old Official Guides show it leaving Durango about midnight getting to Farmington about 3 AM and returning to Durango by 7 AM. I suppose some hard core foamer from the 1930s like Lucius Beebee made the trip and Rogers Whitaker claimed to have ridden EVERY train in North America but even by my foamer standards it seems extreme.
Now please tell me the tale of the depot blowing up while I make some popcorn..
