I truly feel sorry for anyone trying to learn English as a second language; especially someone from say, Germany, where the rules are fairly simple and quite consistent. Please explain to me, for example, why 'through' is pronounced like 'threw', 'trough' like 'sloth', 'rough' like 'ruff' and 'dough' like 'doe'. And don't let me get started on 'there', 'their' and 'they're' or 'yore', 'your' and 'you're'.
No wonder my Uncle Claude was driven to drink at an early age!
