Hi,
I recall our first family trip to the west coast in 1970 (I was 14). The maps provided by the then free trip planning services of Shell , Gulf, and Amaco had areas with big letters on them saying something like NO SERVICES FOR 250 MILES and the arrows would point between say Del Rio Texas and Sanderson Texas.
On our 1972 trip, we made a side trip to Monument Valley while driving from Durango to Flagstaff via Tube City and Mesa Verde.
50 miles is not a problem when you plan ahead. I drove to Chaco Canyon from Bloomfield in 1984. Full tank of gas, and 5 in a gas can. Lots of water and some picnic foods and snacks. Left early in the morning (about dawn) and left Chaco about 12:30 PM. Wonderful time.
I also recall that Dad got real mad when he had to pay $0.599 for a gallon of gas at Del Rio when there was oil in Texas and we paid about $0.299 in Atlanta.
I love the outback areas.
