Hi,
There was the Atlanta Zoo Train Inc that operated from the 1950s to about 1998. It pre-dated the renewal of Zoo Atlanta in 1984 by several decades and was the only non-Zoo Atlanta concessionaire in the Atlanta Zoo. It was two MTC G16 trainsets.
Zoo Atlanta wanted G16 operation, touted a much "improved" 24" gauge system. The results of the campaign and counter campaign was that the G16 left Zoo Atlanta in about 1994-5 but the owner of the G16 did not want to sell the train to Zoo Atlanta. When he left with his train (that had several incidents of sand being put in the gas tank which we had to clean up), Zoo Atlanta got Southern Ry to buy a 24" gauge Chance. As I understand it, the first trip around the loop for the 24" gauge was stopped short when it tuned out the stack was too tall for the G16 tunnel. A hacksaw resolved the clearance problem.
This is in the preservation era but not a preservation train as much as a park ride.
