The Marshall Pass Mainline went straight through Mears Junction. The pic at the start of this thread is a train headed for Gunnison. The Valley Line came off the mainline to the right (when headed west) climbed up and over the top of the mainline, anc continued climbing toward Poncha Pass. The spur track allowed trains from Gunnison to set out Valley Line cars without having to take them to Salida. The extra connecting track made a wye out of the Valley line. Allowing engines to double trains up to Poncha Pass without backing all the way down.
