There were two wrecks, one in which fireman Harry Goldwater was killed and mangled almost beyond recognition and one in which fireman Frank Fitzsimmons sustained shoulder and arm injuries. Fitzsimmons stayed on to become the senior engineer on the narrow gauge out of Salida. He was only 18 when he hired out as a fireman in 1901.
According to Jimmy Blouch's train sheet posts Fitzsimmons shared duties on the Shavano with Walter Runyon, each running every other day. Fitzsimmons was off the run for extended periods of time, having freight engineers fill his turn. Runyon was the engineer on the last run. Fitzsimmons died in 1948 at age 65.
Goldwater was born in 1867 so was roughly 36 at the time of his death.
