It seems 1903 was a bad year for trainmen based in Salida -
Note the dates of the newspaper articles, and on at least one of the photos. There was a wreck in the upper arroyo near Mears Junction in early February, and another wreck closer to Salida in late October. Both the descriptions of the locations and the names given for the victims and the survivors are different, although in both cases the wrecks were apparently caused by the train breaking in half, and then the rear section ramming into the front section at a high rate of speed ("like a rocket") after the air leaked off.

p.s. I'm a notoriously careless reader with an increasingly poor memory, so please double-check this assertion by re-reading all of the relevant posts, above. My feelings won't be hurt if two or three of you catch me making yet another egregious error.
