Earl, when I needed the locomotive number for my headlight I made a full size artwork and then shot two lithographic negatives to sandwich between the two pieces of glass on each side. I think this might have a longer lifespan in the working world than the traditional cardboard. However, my headlight is a display item and remains inside so I have no way of verifying this.
