Yep, that's the old road -
Google Earth doesn't show how steep it was on either side of what I mis-remembered as a ford – no fun getting out of there in wet weather, and just about impossible when there was snow.

p.s. I've added a couple more old photos to the post above that show the road a bit better, as it was back in 1968 and in 1970. The old road remained below the railroad at the S-curves above the new crossing east of Dalton; it shows very clearly in this shot from late September, 2009:
