I too have had a LOT of troubles with the NGDF 'Search' function, Jimmy -

It doesn't like ANY numbers (such as dates) or special characters - not even periods - in the target text.  A couple of weeks ago I did a search for 'St. Pauli Girl' and got ZERO hits, but when I searched for 'St Pauli Girl' WITHOUT the period I got a bunch, so if you can remember a bit of the text rather than the dates that might get you somewhere.  I got three pages of hits searching for 'Lively' / NGDF / All Dates just now.

Per RadarSidetrack and Nathan, you can also do a search of the NGDF using Google; type in "site:ngdiscussion.net target-value", without the quotes and with a space between the site name and the value you're searching for. This even works with photos with a date in the filename, like 680828 for my photos of the last freight departing Alamosa for Durango & Farmington.

p.s.  I just did a Google search using "site:ngdiscussion.net Charles Lively" and got several hits (but none authored by Jimmy Blouch).
