Hi Doug,
I'm not Chris, but my understanding is that the first European to come within sight of New Zealand was the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman (after whom Tasmania was also named), and New Zealand was accordingly first mapped by Dutch cartographers. However, Tasman's attempts to make landfall and actually claim the land for the Dutch were unsuccessful because of the hostile reception the Maori gave to his landing parties.
