Kevin you are right about losing them. I remember shooting some video of B-17 Liberty Belle, I believe in 2011 or 2012. It was used in the first aircraft video we ever did with flying warbirds. I couldn't believe it when I heard it had burned up. I think there are 12 left flying in the U.S. Back in 2013 or 2014 a P-51 crashed in Texas, and the pilot was killed. I only heard about cause it was the same outfit that flys the B-25 "Doolittle Raider-Special Delivery".
At our local museum, the pilot had an oil pump failure, and the cylinder blew. He was lucky to make it back, and ran through the fence at the end of the runway, and onto a local road. Lots of wing damage and its still not flying(2011 accident with a P40). Restorations take forever, and cost a bundle. Its most all labor, but parts are not cheap either. I just wish they would have more events when the weather was not as hot as mid-summer sweltering humidity like it is now!!! Thats a plus though for the Colorado narrow gauge...less humidity and less temps in the mountains.
I am always worried whenever I see these touring aircraft that something might go wrong. In a way I am surprised they keep flying these rare planes, but I am glad they do. As a rule I hate flying, but enjoy seeing the WW2 planes in action.
