Pretty much. The rectangular type are split bearings which can be tightened as they wear. The catch is that they can be tricky to get set just right and then often don't stay that way for long. Engineers would be constantly tinkering with them with varying results ranging from pounding rods to overheated bearings. They are more complicated to machine as well. Most shops decided they just weren't worth the trouble and eliminated them as the main rods needed replacing.
