Kevin; Being slide valves explains he difference in crankpin, etc. location you asked about. With
the slide valve the steam is on the oitside of the "D" valve and the exhaust connection is on the inside. Whereas with the piston valve the exhaust is on the outside,or ends, of the spool and the steam is in the middle.
As you can see, this means that where the Walscheart gear return crank follows the main crankpin, on the slide valve the return crank would have to be ahead of the main crankpin. This
is the difference you noticed.
