Way back in 1963 I was on a trip in Mexico that took us to the Yucitan and the city of Merida which I believe had 3 gauges of track. I am pretty sure these engines came from the the 3-foot line we saw down there. I know that they had some great old stuff.
One of the things our group did was rent a bus, and chase a mixed train on the standard gauge line to Progresso. My dad rode it. The power was an 1880 something 4-4-0. That was quite a day with the pace bus!
Merida was a great place that was seldom visited. I recall eating dinner atop the rooftop restaurant at dusk and all of us listening to a steam train departing as it circled the city. We could see the smoke and hear it for 15-20 minutes. What a great main course that was for a 12 year old.
We also rode the narrow gauge all day from Pueblo to Mexico City.
The rest of group(all older than us)wanted to ditch the youngsters saying they were going to a tourist trap called the "Valle de Mexico". So, dad sensing they didn't want us, took us to the 100% steam roundhouse and yard of the Narrow gauge(San Lorenz ??)
It wasn't until about 8 years later we realized Valle de Mexico was the big Standard Gauge yard in Mexico City. Some years later the leader of the group apoligised when he saw we were still avid steam fans!
Looking back on the trip, two of the best highlights were the Merida steam, and the all day narrow gauge ride to Mexico City.
One of these days I will try to get some of these pics on a disk or something to post them. I have two piles from Mexico, one pile is the blurred pile!
