Which is why I think every narrow gauge fan should visit Maine. There is a lot of narrow gauge history there in a comparatively small area (plus friendly people and unique equipment!), and the historical territories of the various Two-Foot railroads are actually quite close to one another. For example, you can drive from Wiscasset or Alna (on the WW&F) to Phillips (on the SR&RL) in under two hours -- a straight shot of ~80 miles up ME-27 and ME-4 that will take you right through Randolph (former home of the Kennebec Central RR) and New Sharon (where there are bridge abutments from the unfinished FS&K visible from the highway) as well as Farmington and Strong. It makes for very efficient railfanning!
And as James has noted, this year's National Narrow Gauge Convention can be your chance if you've never been before.
