The base of operation for the SVRR group is McEwen, named for a nearby depot stop on the old SVRy line. The old McEwen site was the initial terminus of the SVRy until the line was pushed on up the valley to the mining boom town of Sumpter. Our McEwen depot and yard are about 22 miles up country from Baker City a fair sized town with many accommodations for all budgets. The town of Sumpter just 6 miles up the valley from McEwen has cabin rentals and a very nice motel. Union Crk. campground which is a USFS facility is about 4 miles below McEwen and has full hook ups for RV's. I think there are RV hook ups in Sumpter as well. At our McEwen yard, we have a GN caboose that can be reserved first come first serve throughout the season and sleeps several people. Volunteers have been known to stretch out sleeping bags in our 2 original SVRy cabooses and many volunteers park their RV's on site or tent camp. While we don't have water and sewer hook ups, there are a few places where extension cords can be ran for power to RV's. We have a one stall shower room for volunteers along with public restrooms and porta-pottys in the rail yard. We do not charge volunteers for parking their RV's or camping on site.
