Michael, my interest in the SVRy probably goes back to my first visit in 1977 or 78. I live 2 1/2 hours away, though back then with the 55 mile an hour speed limit and prior to improvements in the rural hwys. I have to traverse, it was more like a 3 1/2 hour drive. My visits to the rr continued sporadically till the mid 90's, when I found I needed a "fix" at least once a summer and maybe twice. In 1998, I happened in prior to the start of the regular season and one of the members working on site told me that I ought to consider joining the operating crew. Annual safety training was coming up, and he said that would be a good place to start. I told him that "I live too far away". Wow, did I get an ear full. He said, "you know we have crew that come from Western Ore., Southern Ore. Southern Idaho, Western Wa., Alaska and we even have someone from Sweden. I sent in my membership, but didn't make safety weekend till 99. Since then I have worked my way up to reaching my goal of being a qualified engineer on our #3. In that I live in N.E. Ore. I am sometimes referred to as a local. So even if you can only make it to Safety Weekend in May, and put in a weekend on site sometime during the season, you should consider it. If you want to help and can't make Safety Weekend, we generally can work out some mentoring and individual training.
