Re: Gainesville Midland curves - easement/spirals

Hi,

Everyone knows that railroads use spiral easements. Right?

Everyone knows that when they are not used, they can be approximated poorly using a larger radius curve on either side of the sharp radius curve. Right?

Everyone knows that when changing curve radii, you use a spiral easement. Right?

Narrator: Pleased to present for your consideration the multiple radii curve between the Mulburry depot and the Mulburry River.

Traveling left to right on the drawing, the multi-radii curve starts with a 716' (DoC 8) radius curve going to a central curve of 1910' (DoC 3) turning to a 955' curve (DoC 6) as it starts out on the trestle.

This was built as the Gainesville Jefferson and Southern in 1881 as 36" gauge and became the Gainesville Midland in 1904. The line was standard gauged in 1940 and was abandoned in 1947.

Everyone knows that the narrow gauge is to save costs in earthwork and right of way aquisition. Right?

Narrator: Pleased to present for your consideration notice that the right of way in Mulburry is 50 feet wide. Once past that, it is 200 feet wide.
