Grant, one of the things that HTP has done is encouraged the crews to dress "authentically" and avoid brightly colored baseball hats. Michael has also invested in a fair number of good quality hats that have been donated to the crews. Of course, especially in the winter, comfort is important so authenticity sometimes suffers, but by and large the crews have looked pretty good. While Jeff's bowler has some historic precedent, it certainly was not typical of the crews in the era the trains are typically represent. Here is some of the crew in a 1967 pic:

Now if only we can find some cab curtains. And maybe get flag holders back on the engines to hold the water bags!
