A 1972 D&RGW Employee TT shows the trains as "Mixed" as does my last D&S timetable. In reality, I don't think much in the way of freight was handled on the train, except LCL in the Grande Gold boxcars after the early 1960's. By then all the trains were close to maximum tonnage for the 470's and adding freight cars was just not possible without doubleheading. I've seen some pics of late 1950's Silverton trains with a full 10 car consist and a few freight cars added. One shot has both engines on the head end. The other shows the helper was on the point, followed by the freight consist, the road engine, then the passenger train.
