Cabooses weren't for the engine crew...Usually only one caboose for a given freight train.

They were used for:

1. Conductors "office "where he did the paper work required for the train, movements, pickups, setouts, tonnage, delays, etc..

2. a place for the rear brakeman to ride and observe the train from the rear, as well as be in place to go back and flag if necessary.

3. A place for the train crew to eat.

Engine crews stayed on the engine. Head brakeman rode the doghouse and observed the train from the head end.
