As related by Bob Richardson, the ART orange was applied to several of the long reefers in the early to mid 1950's. As Rio Grande headquarters had put an end to the regular repainting of narrow gauge freight cars in 1949, the Alamosa car foreman worked out a trade with the ART car guy in Alamosa that saw the D&RGW end up with some ART orange paint in return for the Rio Grande guys doing some work on ART cars. All was off the record so that it "looked good on paper" and Denver never saw an expenditure for paint.
According to Robert E Sloan, the Alamosa shops repainted ART (American Refrigerator Transit) standard gauge cars and occasionaly used some of the leftover ART orange on the narrow gauge reefers. Then again, in another section of his book Sloan relates the story as told by Bob Richardson and adds that the orange cars were "used as "meat cars" for LCL on the Thursday freight"
