Hi Robby:
I've heard some reports of major firebox work being done on 470's in the early 1960's. I think if any such work was needed on a 480 or 490 by that time they were parked and another engine with less work was used.
I believe the first locomotive in Chama to get front and rear tube sheets was 487 about 1986 or so. The work was contracted out to a guy in Durango who also built live steam locomotives. He had a ASME stamp and also built the replacement boiler for the Kahului #12. He also built the replacment tender tanks on 497 and 488 (487?). I believe he also did other tanks for the D&S. The guy took FOREVER to do the work on 487 and it missed the entire season waiting for him to finish it up so we could put tubes in it.
The guy is no longer is business over in Durango.
