Back in the early seventies you could drive a high clearance vehicle across the San Miguel just to the north side of the Butterfly trestle site. Only when the river was low. You could drive up to the Ames slide site, On the west side of the creek there is a steep area up to the roadbed. Some ties were still in place and bumping over them out to Windy Point was interesting. Turning around was even more interesting. Truck and debris were over the side. In later years trees had grown up on the hill leading up to the roadbed preventing vehicle access. Now that stretch is a hiking trail, but foot travel is easy, That whole section of foot trail from Vance Junction to Butterfly is well worth the hike. You can still drive the lower portion of the Ophir Loop down to the Butterfly trestle site or come up from the Ames power plant past the falls of the San Miguel.
