The most well known version of this story is the one told to Gilbert Kneiss by Charlie Sexton. It was first published in RAILROAD MAGAZINE and retold in Kneiss' BONANZA RAILROADS. In this version John Sexton innocently parks the car next to the depot at Palisade and waits for it to be discovered by newspaper reporters.
A more accurate telling of this tale can be found in the biography of US attorney (for Nevada) George Springmeyer, titled: THE UNSPIKED RAIL. In this version John Sexton has the car painted, then takes the photo as posted. He then mails the photo to the Post Office Department and threatens to forward the picture to the Japanese embassy.
