Jeff, congratulations to the whole crew. I often wondered if I would see an SP ng engine under steam. That Desert 5 chine whistle is different sounding. I had heard reference to them. I grew up at Tracy, CA 1940's to mid 50's. I remember 5 & 6 chime and Hancock whistles, but I don't remember the Desert whistles.
We had an SP 5 chime on Argent Lu. 5 here at Nevada City, CA 15-20 years ago while I was fireman on her. You could hear that whistle for 3-4 miles. There was an SP 5 chime whistle on the sawmill where I worked at Camptonville, CA 50 years ago. You could hear it for 7-8 miles, it was atop the tall stack at the boiler plant. Those whistles sure bring back memories.
What whistles are on SP 8 &9?
