Re: BBS - why?

Initially I thought it was a problem with the WebBBS script itself. Looking into the WebBBS support forums, I've found some talk of this sort of thing happening on other people's BBSs when the message archive gets up into the tens of thousands of messages. The suggested solutions are to upgrade to v5.12 (which we did a few weeks ago), and / or to pare down the number of messages that have to be indexed. Since the upgrade, I've been working on archiving some of the older stuff and have pared it down by about 9000 posts (it's actually been kinda fun to go back through all that old stuff). Anyway, the fact that this is still happening means that I've either not pared things down enough or the bug persists in the newer version.
I haven't seen any mention of this phenomenon being browser related, so I don't think that's the problem. I'm a little suspicious that the problem may be related to allowing users a choice between using the board with and without cookies. Given the recent crapola, I maybe should rethink this.
Anyway, as for browsers, I primarily use Galeon (*nix only), but on my M$ machine, I use Mozilla, and am quite happy with it. First, it's not published by any gigantic corporation trying to rope you into a lifetime relationship. They simply put out a browser that a user would want. It supports tabbed browsing (once you've tried it you'll never go back), and it can be easily configurd to supress popup ads!!! Very nice. Anyway, you might want to give it a try, it doesn't cost you anything and doesn't usurp control over your whole machine.
