Re: Question regarding the 783 Drop Bottom Gon rebuild

August 04, 2015 03:15PM
This A-frame is being done to meet an operational need of the CATS, We built enough A-frames to equip only 2 cars, and I doubt there are many more in the fleet of drop bottoms. We have plenty of historic rebuilds of drop bottom gons already, just like the one outside the CRF being worked on right now.

Please remember that the Rio Grande too modified their equipment to meet current operational needs like blowing out the ends of high side gons to carry pipe and cutting down box cars to make idler cars between the pipe gons. The Friends have rebuilt many of those cars too right down to putting the rail back on the idlers to replace the strength lost when they cut off the box car body.
