Hi,
If I recall correctly, the New Mexico (?) Historical Preservation Study that could be purchased by anyone in the 1980s was a good starting point.
A large number of box cars were purchased for conversion to passenger cars as well as representing the historical class.
The C&TS started out with three (3) K-37s and six (6) K36's. One caboose 0503. The privately owned a0579 became C&TS property and thankfully to all involved is now restored. I think 05635 was either owned by Scenic or by a private individual and converted from stock car 5635. C&TS later purchased it. The 0306 was a C&TS conversion as stated elsewhere.
thirteen (13) 6500 steel flat cars (supposedly including one or both of the bulkhead flats scrapped at Farmington) were included in the sale. I think the idea was to convert most to passenger cars. Ultimately all 13 were converted and two had to be purchased from the D&S to replace the series (I think to replace their usefullness in MOW service).
I am not sure how many steel SG cut down passenger cars (either converted from 6500's or intended directly for passenger service) have been constructd/converted.
The history of the C&TS is as interesting as the D&RGW.
As an asside, the Siverton/D&S started out with only two K36's, three K28s, (between Alamosa and Durango) four (4) K37s and a K27 (skeletal).
After the conclusion of the current trade, D&S will have 2 K28s, 5 K36's and 2 (or 1 1/2 - only one tender) K37s. The C&TS will have a K27, a K28, four K36's, and four K37s.
D&S = 9 steam and access to one smaller steam (315).
C&TS = 10 steam and access to one smaller steam (168) for 45 years.
Anyone up to writing the history of the formation of the group that eventually saved the C&TS and its history through say 2010? Before those that were there are gone?
