Several errors are contained in a few of these posts and need to be clarified. First, the white pass made no decisions as to what or how the work would be done... Second, Robert Franzen led the move and rebuild of 1744. Third, running a locomotive when it is not in the best interest of the equipment or the safety of the public is something that any number of people do but is not something that one would put on their resume.(ala georgetown)
Just want to keep the facts straight folks.
By the way Phil, I would say that replaceing a smokebox because of the previously mentioned work that was performed in a manner completely contradicting standard practice is not what I would call "getting their hands on it" Nor burnt up rod bearings, turning grooved-pitted and tapered journals, turning tapered crank pins, etc. That sounds to me as though it is required work to even get on track towards having a good piece of machinery.
Did I possibly misunderstand your post if so I apologize.
