I made my first trip to Cass in 1966, and went back quite a few times until my first child came along in 1977. I was last there in 2010 to celebrate my 40th wedding anniversary.
One of my favorite things was to ride the first train to Whittaker. I would then walk over the hill to view Gum Field (which is pretty much grown up with trees now). In those days, it was possible to watch the first train drop down the hill to the second switchback. It would then reappear at the lower edge of the field on its way down to the first switchback. Soon the Bald Knob train would storm up through the switchbacks. I'd then board the Bald Knob train and enjoy the rest of the day. In those days, it was often possible to obtain a cab ride simply by asking the engineer. I still rate Cass as one of the best steam railroads in the country, right up there with the C&TS.
