For the uninitiated, this is the engine in question:
The above image is from Art Huneke's excellent photo essay on the famous June 5, 1955 fan trip pulled by 39. With hundreds of New York-area railfans snapping pictures that day, it is by virtue of this one event that 39 is probably the single most photographed steam locomotive the LIRR ever owned. (Random photos from this excursion turn up periodically on Ebay, and I've purchased a couple myself -- but none as good as the one above.)
