Way back in 1981 as part of my honeymoon, we stayed at AH Wilderness Guest Ranch. That was the last year of their operation. Anyway one morning Kathi and I made a big outing to the Animas River Bridge to photograph the train crossing. It was a 3-mile hike each way.
This was the first or second year of Bradshaws ownership, and I don't think the bridge had been strengthened yet. The day we were there the first train was doubleheaded, and it was 2 K28's.
First the helper engine crossed, and blew down the boiler, then the train came a few minutes later. We got up on a hillside and watched, framing with some pine trees. I shot sound movies back in those days.
On the way back to the ranch, the second train showed up about an hour behind the first. There were no decent locations at that time of the day for the sun, and the shots were in shadows. That outing just got us back in time for lunch as I remember. Good Times!
