I had the privledge to ride the Ali-Shan Forestry Railroad in 1979. This railroad is the most spectacular line I have ever seen, period. Fifty miles long, climbing from near sea level to 7200 feet, with two switchbacks, 49 tunnels, 50 bridges, the railroad climbs from the tropics to the temperate zone. When I was there they were still using two of the smaller shays, #12 and #17, in logging service.
