The Alishan Forest Railway is a 30in gauge logging-turned-tourist railway in Taiwan that features some impressive civil engineering. The line has over 6% grades, 60 degree curves, switchbacks and a triple spiral loop as it ascends from Chai-yi to Alishan. Over its long life, there have been relatively few accidents of any note, but this morning I read that 17 passengers were killed in an accident as a train was descending the line.
Cause of the accident appears to have been brake failure. The line had airbrakes, though retaining link-and-pin couplers. Locos were always on the downhill side of trains to minimize runaways, but with no airbrakes, inertia could have overwhelmed the locos ability to stop the train
At this time, I have no links to offer.
