The problem was that the front end of the locomotive had been disassembled long before it got to the WW&F. What we had was a pile of baffles and netting that appeared to be the components of a Master Mechanic front end. When we attempted to assemble it, we found that at least one item was missing. Since we have no original drawings or other reference materials, we do not know if the missing piece was a baffle or netting. Also, it was determined that the removal of these components to punch tubes was going to be a major undertaking. With those obstacles, our mast mechanic decided that a shop-designed front end arrangement similar to the one now successfully in use on No. 10 would replace the original design.
