I spent most of the weekend trying to solve the puzzle of the front end arrangement on No. 9, with a lot of help and encouragement from the two Dons, Fenstermacher and Sanger. No one alive today knows how the various baffles and screens were supposed to fit together inside the smokebox, so most of Friday was devoted to collecting various pieces of likely-looking iron. Once we had everything that may have come out of the locomotive, we spent Saturday trying to fit it all into place. By the end of the day, having assembled everything in our best guess configuration, we determined the locomotive would draft very poorly, some items were missing, and all those pieces would make it very difficult and time consuming to punch tubes. So we decided to return the various components to storage and instead design a petticoat and netting system similar to the successful installation in No. 10. Stay tuned!
