Good work Dan! With your knowledge as a professional railroader you have a step up on the rest of us trying to figure out what the actual operation was. I think I posted this photo on NG Diss. before, but here it is in context with what was going on through out April at Larch. Flat cars are indeed in use with no sideboards. I imagine unloading the cars was hand work for the section men. Likely the railroads steam shovel was just out of sight to the left facing the photo.
