As far as I have been able to determine the black was a mixture of lamp black, oil(linseed), and a thinner to make it brushable (turpentine). The source of black was important. The blackest black was ivory black, yes, burnt ivory. There blacks of varying hues from there. One of the problems I have with black is it is hard to keep it looking good. It shows every streak and speck of dust. One day I suppose I will make lamp black and oil, and apply it to something appropriate.
One problem with raw lamp black is it is one of the dirty dirts unlike sawdust which is a clean dirt. The smallest speck of lamp black can dirty a hectare of linen especially if there is a woman around. Mixing lamp black is best carried out in a strong wind where you are inside the shop and some unsuspecting volunteer is outside mixing. After the lamp black is mixed you shouldn’t let the volunteer back into the shop. Of course he won’t be allowed anywhere until he walks through a car wash. Twice.
