It was built new in 1979 or '80, I can't remember exactly. Before that, there was no water tank in Anotnito on the C&TS. The tender was filled overnight, we hoped, using a graden hose. Back then the town water system was rather unreliable, at least in that part of town, and we were lucky if the tender was full in the morning. There was frequently NO water pressure in the evening after the train got into town.
On several occasions we left the next morning with bareley more than the water we came in with the previous night. I recall getting to Big Horn on one trip with only 6" left in the tank. Mark Yeamans was the engineer that day and managed to nurse the train into Sublette. By the time we got to the stand pipe there were only a couple of inches of water sloshing around in the bottom of the tank and the injectors would no longer run. We were really wishing that Lava was still in service that day.
The first few trips out of Antonito after the new tank was put into service were interesting as well. Something leached out of the new lumber that made the boilers foam badly. That was one of the only times I recall having to deal with foaming on the narrow gauge.
