Pillows on the rail are a bad idea too. Damn "feathers" get all over the place.
Seriously though; long ago and far away I once slipped and fell while stepping on a rail. I was very young so I didn't have to far to fall and except for minor scrapes got away with it but, I never did it again. For most people I think it is a good common sense rule.
