Actually, James -
IIRC, it was an abandoned lumber mill near Susanville, CA - not Alturas - that had once been used to cut up 300' Giant Sequoias that arrived by narrow gauge railway, so it was plenty long enough. I believe the blacksmith was at one time planning to convert the AC-9 to three-foot gauge, but ran out of money after completing only the front engine.
