It is interesting to read some history about how Japan got sucked into a war they could not expect to win. First off for Japan it was really a war with China for real estate, which Japan was winning and continued to win right up until the end. The educated Japanese "political" classes and the rather cosmopolitan Navy were dead set against war with the U.S. But the Army was dominated largely by less educated unsophisticated violent nationalists who believed their own racial superiority crap. That's where Tojo came from, he was an army general. The folks who should have been leading Japan were facing assassination threats from this violent group of racist nationalists. The Emperor, who could have prevented all this, was naive, isolated and hands off. It is an interesting story, not unlike Germany, were a perfectly sane country was led to destruction by a minority of bad guys because not enough folks paid enough attention until it was too late.
