Greg:
Lost my dad about 16 years ago. He was not a railfan, but would take me places I wanted to go. It is too bad my mom hated New Mexico so much (southern girl, missed her trees). I probably would have grown up in Farmington as my dad was offered a good job there.
My dad rode the San Juan from Durango to Alamosa and back in the winter of 44. He remembered seeing a rotary snow plow on a siding some where between Antonito and Chama. My dad had lived in California in the 30s and had seen rotary plows on the SP, so it was no big deal to him. "Seen one train, seen them all" was his motto.
