I see your point, but remember I told you in advance these were going to be colorized. Most folks who pick-up the box, will look at it just like any other video. (1) Are they attracted to it (2) Is the subject something they are interested in (3) What are the details, (4)What length of time is the tape, (5) Does it work in my VCR.
The point is, most folks think videos are in color, and its rare for stuff in the 50's to be black and white. Early stuff tends to be B&W though.
I have seen other companies use B&W images on their products even though the stuff was in color. However, I think most modern video buyers would be turned off if they see all B&W on the cover, and may think (a)These are B&W for sure (b)This is a cheap outfit, so the production must be junk, (c)Narrow gauge, heck no, we like them full-sized trains, (e)Don't buy videos from someone else, cause they can't be as good as their own (f)Don't buy videos anyway, cause they don't like anyone to make money off of a hobby <img class=" />!!!
All kidding aside we went round and round on these. One layout had the 490 shot and the Cumbres shot on the front, and other had the full version of the K28 with the Silverton Station, but I opted for this version with the bigger K28, and leaving the station shot on the box, but on the back with the others.
There does come a point when throwing more money into this thing simply throws away more cash.
The only reason we colorized these in the first place is (1) We didn't have any color images(slides or prints), (2) These B&W images just happened to be the EXACT trains that are depicted. To me thats the most important aspect of the whole thing, and its neat that the exact consist of the 487 train is the one you are riding on in the video. The shot of the 476(#7) at Silverton is actually in the film, except my dad was on the other side of train, and capture them removing the 4700N from the front of it.
It's a whole lot easier working with contemporary stuff, where you can get color images and not have to worry about a sound track, or film transfer. Whatever the outcome, at least the stuff is going to be available!
In the next post I am giving a little info as to some things in the film.
