Appearance is subjective, and in that sense you can compete just fine. I actually like the look of the class 42 locomotives as-delivered better than the "Eureka" for a variety of reasons. This well-known photograph of sister locomotive #99 (available via Denver Public Library) is useful because it allows the viewer to zoom in and get a very good look at the intricate patterns that were painted on the domes and cylinders of this class as built: [
digital.denverlibrary.org] Note that #99-101 were black base color instead of green like the other nine were.
Of course, if you want to replicate it in RGS colors, the later style with rounded domes and such is possibly your only option because the appearance modification to most of this class was done by the D&RG prior to the sale of #93 to the RGS. This later style looks good as well, with a much more modern appearance versus the clearly 19th century style used previous. There aren't a lot of existing 4-4-0's done in this sort of style because of the type's strong association with the wild west and flashier paint styles of earlier years.
